The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is offering $9 million in grants to expand a program that trains retirees to spot Medicare fraud.

CMS’ Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) program, which was launched in 1997, trains seniors, caregivers and beneficiary family members to review Medicare notices and Medicaid claims for signs of fraudulent activity. They also are instructed on whom to contact if they identify suspicious activity.

The states with the highest level of fraud activity — New York, Texas, Florida and California — receive the biggest grants.

The SMP program is operated by the Administration on Aging in partnership with the Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General and CMS.
