"I don't believe I've ever witnessed as many people at a
hearing," Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) remarked last week. She was referring
to a high-profile session at the Senate Committee on Aging, in which lawmakers
and invited guests discussed the personal impact of Alzheimer's disease. Former
Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor highlighted the event. O'Connor
shared her experience as a caregiver to her husband, John, who was diagnosed
with Alzheimer's in 1990. The speakers called for more funding and a national
strategy for this fatal illness, which now claims more than 5 million victims.
Currently, there are no products available to cure Alzheimer's.
