A 45-year-old local man with no apparent ties to the Pinelake Health and Rehabilitation Center in Carthage, NC, walked into it Sunday morning and shot 11 people. He killed seven residents and a nurse and was shot himself before being taken into custody. A responding police officer who confronted the gunman in a facility hallway, was among those shot but in good condition, officials said.

Police disclosed little Sunday about the gunman, Robert Stewart, or his possible motives, but they said they planned to reveal more at a press conference at 10 a.m. today, according to a local newscast. One online photo from a local news outlet Sunday showed an investigator taking away a rifle with camouflage markings on it. Stewart opened fire around 10 a.m., police said. The residents who died ranged in age from 78 to 98 years old.

Pinelake is a 110-bed facility featuring rehab, skilled nursing and Alzheimer’s care. The 16-year-old for-profit facility recently earned five stars in the new federal nursing home rating system. It is in Carthage, a town of about 2,000 and the seat of Moore County, about 60 miles southwest of Raleigh.
